So, soon I will be purchasing a new-er truck.
I really want a 02+ Ram 4x4.
I`m not familiar with the HEMI at all, so it seems best to find a 02-03 that still has the 5.9 Magnum that I`m familiar with. Or how similar are the 5.9 and 5.7 Hemi?
I can`t seem to find the truck I want, in my price range. I really wanted a QC 1500 4x4, but, all I`ve found are 2wd QC`s with the 4.7
I know nothing about the 4.7 engine, how strong is it? Would it be okay to tow a open car trailer and a Fox body mustang? in Regular cab or QC form?
I have found a ton of QC 1500`s with the Hemi, but they are all 2WD.. I just think buying a 2WD I`d be disappointed with it.
My reasoning for 02 and up is because the interior in the rams are basically the same as what I`m in now, and I want something new. So it`s either 02+ Ram, or a Ford or Chevy. But, I can`t really find one of those that i like in my price range either..
What do you guys think?
Maybe buy a QC or RC 1500 2wd Hemi or 5.9 now, and trade it in on a 06-08 in a year or 2? I just know that i need a new DD badly, and it`s gonna be hard to find what i want for the cash i got.

the 4.7 will pull it. I pull an 7500 pound boat with mine. like you already know, there is a big difference between the 5.7 and 4.7, but in my opinion, not much at all, power or build, between the 4.7 and 5.9
but there are a lot more upgrades, cheaper too, for the 5.9

I found a 2003 i think, Ram 1500 Regular cab with the 4.7 and 4x4, it`s like MINT in and out, except for the drivers side mirror is broke, and a crack in the windshield, the dealer is going to fix it before i buy it, IF i buy it.
I`m not so sure on the price.. it has 91k miles and they are asking 9,500 for it.
Also, when i first cranked it, it had a loud tick, as if it were an exhaust leak, but after it ran for 15-20 seconds it went completely away. Is this normal?

not sure about normal or not, but mine doesn`t tick and nothing weird from exhaust. only odd sound mine makes comes from the a/c clutch, kinda likes to mike a high pitch noise when it kicks in
price, its about right, you could probably get them a little lower

The salesman said that the truck had been sitting where it was for almost 2 months. Maybe that`s why it ticked like that? first start up in 2 months..
But, it was Extremely clean. Not a rip, tear, stain absolutely nothing in the interior. It looked almost brand new to me. I had to look at the door stickers to make sure it really was a 6 yr old truck.
It also has Dual exhaust, and some Mustang Bullit looking wheels..That`s gotta go for sure. Does NOT fit the 4x4 look at all.
And the salesman said that the mirror wasn`t broke when they got it. What had happened is when they parked it where it is, someone didn`t fold the mirrors in, and they clipped another trucks mirror, and broke both trucks side mirrors.. DOH!

best bet would be go back in a day or 2 and ask to drive it again. Fire it up n have a listen.
I kno earlier 4.7 dakotas are known to have exhaust leaks.. pass. side manifold i believe.

That`s really what it sounded like to me. Me and the salesman stood there and listened to it, and right at the same time we both said " Sounds like a exhaust leak" But then i got in, and rev`d it up a little, and after that, it totally quit ticking. And it was coming from the drivers side.

something to consider, if it has a brake controller it`s obviously pulled pretty heavy loads. It`s been worked. Check the bed for signs of a gooseneck or 5th wheel. Culd mean an eventual trans overhaul. Also 120k miles is pretty high.

No ball in the bed, or holes as if a 5th wheel was mounted. But it does have a pretty beefy hitch.

I had an 03 QC 1500 4WD 4.7L and it is not a big time tow rig. Towing a 7500lbs trailer is going to ask a lot of it. The 03-07 4.7L is enough if you don`t need to tow or haul a lot but if you do then don`t settle for anything less than a HEMI. I have had 2 QC 1500 4WD 5.7L`s( 04 and my current 08 )and it is night and day different.
