When it is cold out and i start my truck, after a few mins the idle jumps to 1000rpm. When it does this it sounds as if it is missing. But if it is not plugged in and i start it on a cold day (-10c) it will jump to 1000rpm instantly and it is running smooth. Now if truck is sounding as if it is missing i can turn on the second high idle throu the cruise and it smooths right out as well. Anyone have any ideas why it does this.
My truck is a 2006 3500 AT 4x4 CTD

sounds pretty normal, question is, how much do you idle it at regular idle and when you are driving put a little load on it around 1750 rpms and see if you can hear a slight injector knock, it will have like a 12 valve sound.

If its cold outside i try not to idle more then 10mins, i didn`t hear anything at 1750 with a load on it.

you should treat a 3rd gen or newer truck just as if it had a gas engine, the only time you should let it idle is when you are cooling off the turbo when you have been on it hard or pulling and you shouldn`t have to idle more than a couple of mins to get the egts down

Mine does the same thing, sounds horrible. I dump in some fuel treatment and it helps a little but I usually let mine warm up around 1200rpm, 1300-1350rpm if its -20 or colder. I also change my fuel filter every oil change.

Not sure then, my dad also has a 05 and it does it a little as well but he doesn`t have near as many km`s as I have. My 2003 never did it at all, but they have different programming for injection as well.
Where abouts to you live in AB?

Its called the 3cyl high idle. When the coolant is at a certain temp(i dont remember what rite now) it will increase the rpm and go into 3cyl idle its a feature that can be turned off by the dealer. and yes it sounds like it will shake the bolts rite off the engine. 01 & up have it but it usually has to be turned on.
