The 2006 Dodge SRT-10 Quad Cab has plenty of room and rumble, making it a very versatile truck.
It doesn’t seem like fuel pries are doing anything to hinder the excitement of driving around in one of the world’s fastest street trucks, equipped with an exotic V-10 Viper engine. However the vehicle’s nine-mile to the gallon average fuel economy prevented us from slamming on the throttle as much as we would have liked.
Nevertheless, driving the 2006 SRT-10 Quad Cab sedately isn’t going to hinder your ego or your pocket book either. We managed to squeeze out a mile-per gallon better driving this way. In addition, the Tuned suspension, that includes Bilstein mono-tube shock absorbers and rear anti-sway bar, provided smooth operation both on the highway and on a variety of street conditions. Considering the fact that that Quad Cab model is capable of towing 8, 150 lbs. its handling performance doesn’t change much when you switch from daily street driving to towing a boat.
Ram SRT-10 Quad Cab rides on a set of 22-inch Dodge Viper-style custom Wheels mounted on Pirelli Scorpion all-season tires. This provides precise steering and control under all driving conditions and made the STR-10 a pleasure to drive fast or slow. If you do find yourself moving at well over 80 mph the For the braking aspect of performance, SRT engineers developed a special system for the three-channel anti-lock braking system works fantastically well. The SRT-10 is equipped with heavy duty calipers and 15-inch rotors in the front and 14-inch rotors at the rear, this heavy truck stops more like a sports car. Additionally, if you are towing a heavy trailer or boat, you’ll be happy to know that the front brakes are cooled with air ducted from the Front Fascia to reduce heat build-up.
The SRT-10’s Viper engine remains unchanged, producing 505 horsepower and 525 lbs.-ft. of torque. Managed by a four-speed automatic transmission, the performance of the SRT-10 Quad Cab is great, but not ground pounding. The engine is relatively quiet and under normal acceleration, the SRT-10 doesn’t sound menacing. Once you stab the throttle however, the V-10 jumps to life and the exhaust tone sounds dramatically different as you gain back some respect from Mustang and sport compact car owners. From a standing start, the Quad Cab is quite a bit different from the Standard Cab model, in the fact that it doesn’t have quite the same amount of torque transfer on the bottom end of the RPM range.
Although you don’t immediately light up the tires, the V-10 does accelerate quickly and gets up to speed surprisingly fast. Our test model was Inferno Red and it certainly got lots of attention. Several Ram owners stopped to talk to us about the truck, as well as others who simply wanted to see the V-10 under the hood.
At a retail price of $57,110 (as tested) the SRT-10 Quad Cab is definitely a hand-full for the average truck enthusiast. Yet, if you put the price tag aside and the poor fuel economy, you do end up with a unique truck that is not only fast, but can also be used to haul cargo, people and tow your boat or trailer with ease. What’s your priorities?
The power of the V-10 engine is impressive at higher RPM levels on our test Quad Cab SRT-10 pickup. The engine is relatively quite until you hammer on the throttle. | The distinguished Viper hood is often used by enthusiasts on their Hemi Ram model trucks, due to its good looks and menacing appearance. | Large 15-inch brakes in front and 14-inch rotors at the rear dramatically improve the SRT-10 Quad Cab’s stopping power. |
The SRT’s white face gauges are also sporty and helps to slightly differentiate the interior of the SRT-10 over the standard Ram. | The Engine Start button is standard on the SRT-10 and our test model came equipped with an in-dash navigation system. | The SRT-10 seats have additional side bolstering and are racy in appearance. We liked the suede and leather two-tone upholstery that helps to set it apart. |
The dual-tip exhaust gives a performance look to the truck, but it’s the wing and ground effects package that identify this truck as the real deal. | | |
